Standards Committee Overview
The Standards Committee is an all-volunteer committee that works to ensure products sold at the Market comply with our core value that the maker is the seller. The current co-chairs are Candice Westberg and Shellana Moller.
The committee is responsible for:
- Upholding standards: We are not a craft jury. Instead, we only ensure that your craft meets the three basic standards and any craft-specific guidelines outlined in the Market Standards & Craft Specific Guidelines document.
- Formulating guidelines: We are responsible for defining what “handcrafted” means for the Market. We review and revise these guidelines annually to ensure they are clear and precise. This is an ongoing project.
- Addressing issues: We deal with various issues as they arise in the ongoing functions of this committee. Member input is always welcome, as are interested Market members who wish to join.
Basic Standards
All products must meet the following three basic standards:
- Items must be handmade, grown, or gathered by the Market member, or a member of their immediate family living in Oregon.
- The member’s contribution to a finished product must outweigh the contribution of any commercial components. This includes skills in craftsmanship, as well as creative abilities, ingenuity, and design.
- The product must meet basic expectations of product life, function, and safety.
Meetings & Membership
- Committee Meetings: The committee meets on the third Wednesday of each month, after product screening, at the Market office. All committee meetings are open to everyone, and you are welcome to attend.
- Committee Membership: Any active Market member can join the committee. Voting rights are granted after attending three consecutive meetings.
Product Screening
We conduct new product screenings twice a month, on the first and third Wednesdays from March through October. The first screening date of the year is March 5, 2025. All screening dates can be found on the Committee Meeting and Event Calendar. There is a New Member Orientation at 3:15 PM, just before the Product Screening. You must attend an orientation session before your products can be screened.
To schedule an appointment for an orientation and screening, you must call (541) 686-8885 or email i[email protected]. You need to bring a New Product Screening Form with your items. You can download and fill out the form in advance or get a copy at the office.
The Market’s Board of Directors reviews all proposals and decisions of the committee for final approval.
2025 Standards Meeting Minutes
*Minutes are approved at the following month’s meeting, so there is a one-month posting delay. Although they may be marked ‘Draft,’ they have been approved. Board minutes are on the Board Information page.
