August 2006 Beautiful Booth of the Month Award:
Jennifer Hoover, Lovely Jewels
& Emily Lewis-Berry, Queen Bead
|
| This beautiful booth is the first to catch my eye every Saturday as I walk into the Market from our downtown Market office. It sits right on the southwest corner of the "Fountain" block, looking sophisticated and inviting every week. It displays the work of jewelers Jennifer Hoover and Emily Lewis-Berry. Jennifer's work features dramatic combinations of baroque pearls and semi-precious stone beads, frequently with a larger centerpiece. She also makes cast silver rings. Emily's work features fine beadwork from tiny glass beads, usually around larger semi-precious stone cabachons. Their booth-partnership began last season, when they met in a jewelry class. Jennifer was already selling at Market. Emily brought some of her beadwork to show the teacher. The work immediately caught Jennifer's eye, and she asked Emily to come and sell at Market with her. Thier work compliments each other so nicely, that it's not jarringly apparent that it is the work of two different jewelers.
In the world of fashion, they say black is a slimming color. In the world of this booth, it makes the space look absolutely expansive. It also highlights and intensifies the color of the work, but the intesity is balanced by the lighter colored display pieces that are grouped on the right side of the display. The double tiered arrangement, that starts at waist height, makes the pieces easy to see and reach without making customers stoop or stretch. The step-in lay-out allows folks to concentrate on the jewelry without being in the flow of foot traffic. The magenta/fuscia drapes out front really frame the booth and separate it from the rest of the visual hubbub of the marketplace.
You can visit Jennifer and Emily, and have a closer look at their beautiful work in booth T33, at the corner of South Park and West Park.
